BDS SOMERSET ROUND UP FOR CARRIAGE DRIVING MAGAZINE BDS REPORTS & REVIEWS
Members took full advantage of the much improved Spring Weather on Bank Holiday Monday May 7th with a drive from Kathleen Hills Sampford Farm. 2 routes were available, a drive of 12 miles crossing the Devon and Somerset Borders and a shorter route of 5 miles round the village of Sampford Arundel for Novice combinations and small ponies.
National Junior Driver – Isobel Westbrom-Barr joined us to give her pony Basil a pre-competition workout. Isobel is aiming for the European Youth Championships at Kishar-Aszar in August and enjoyed a days driving for pleasure with Groom/Backstep David Brown. Everybody enjoyed a delicious spread for lunch after the drive prepared by host, AC Kathleen Hill. These drives are always popular, not just for the beautiful scenery, but the excellent, food and hospitality extended by Kathleen.
We have a busy summer ahead with events, suitable for all ages and standard of driving. BDS Trec will take place on Sunday 1st July at Sampford Arundel. This year we are hoping to attract more people with small ponies so are offering a section for ponies 12.2 and under with separate times for this section. As well as the usual skills and obedience section and drive, we offer a cones course as well to make it a fun day!! Entry forms are available from AC Kathleen Hill.
Our ever popular camp held at Fenix Carriage Centre will take place on Thursday 19th and Friday 20th July. Members receive first class instruction from Jo and Mark Broadbent on both days. Most attending stay overnight and there are activities to keep everyone entertained. Last years treasure hunt proved to be most amusing, bringing out the competitive spirit in most of the members! After instruction on the second day there is usually a competition so you can put to the test what has been learnt during the two day course. Camp is ideal for both novice and experienced combinations as you are grouped according to ability. Everybody that has attended in the past has commented on how much they improve over the two days as well as how much fun it is! This camp does get quite booked up, so please get in touch with Kathleen to let her know you are coming to avoid disappointment.
We have more events planned for August, September and October, including our annual Beach Drive at Bream Sands. We would love to invite new members to our events, so if you are new to driving and would like some help and advice, or just wish to make new friends, do please get in touch with Kathleen Hill and you will be made most welcome
