SOCIETY TREASURER RETIRES
Sam Curtis has been the British Driving Society Treasurer for, amazingly, the last 39 years and has decided that the time has come to retire and switch off his calculator. Sam was originally offered the appointment as ‘Accountant’ by Sanders Watney and he acceded to the position of Treasurer on the death of Reg Brown. He has served under successive Chairmen since 1973 and has worked closely on the Finance Committee with our current Chairman, Richard Lanni, for the last 14 years. Richard has personally thanked Sam for the work he has carried out on behalf of the Society and we can only hope that we can identify a suitable replacement with the same dedication and attention to detail that he has demonstrated over his many years in office. However the story doesn’t quite end yet! Firstly - Sam has kindly agreed to remain in office until the end of September to allow us to find his replacement and effect as smooth a transfer of books, records and procedures as possible. and Secondly - the Society wishes to call on its Members to mark Sam’s retirement together with his extensive and loyal service and would ask that, in recognition, we would be pleased to receive donations towards a Golden Handshake and these should be submitted to the Secretary, Mrs Tess Styles, 83 New Road, Helmingham, Stowmarket, Suffolk IP14 6EA by September 30th 2012. Sam – We all wish you many, many years ahead to enjoy a well earned and happy retirement.
We are now seeking applications for an HONORARY TREASURER to carry on the books and accounts function on behalf of the Society. The successful candidate would liaise directly with Sam and the Chairman to effect as smooth a transfer of undertakings as possible, ideally would hold an Accountancy qualification and would join the Finance Committee in a pivotal role. The job brief requires the control of all day to day financial functions, bookkeeping records and preparation of annual financial statements for presentation to our auditors. The books and records are currently maintained in a manual format but system computerisation is deemed an essential, immediate task for the new appointee. The Chairman is well versed in all these accountancy functions and would work closely with the successful candidate to achieve the Society’s requirements. The position provides a sensible Honorarium and Expenses package for a Society of our standing and would afford the successful candidate an important role in the financial future of the British Driving Society. All enquiries please in the first instance to Richard Lanni, Southwoods, Heughfield Road, Bridge of Earn, Perth, PH2 9BH.
