CARRIAGE DRIVING ROUTES
IN
NORTH EAST WALES

The project is to produce a high quality booklet of Carriage Drives that show cases the best carriage driving routes that North East Wales has to offer. The idea for this booklet  came from ‘The Bishop Bennet Way’ booklet that is aimed at horse riders  produced by Chester & Cheshire West Council.

We will start off with a pilot booklet through the County of Flintshire that then could be rolled out through Wrexham & Denbighshire but most off all it could be through out Wales

The Booklet will contain maps of the routes within interpretation of each route. Identified on the maps there will also be the opportunity for local businesses to be highlighted, where the carriage drivers will be welcome along the way, these will include B&Bs, hotels, pubs, cafes, farm shops etc., which will be able to cater for visitor’s needs.

We have identified 6 areas  to be featured within the booklet,

Area 1

Leeswood, Llanfynydd, Nercwys, Treuddyn  Gwernymynydd:

Area 2

Caergwrle Hope, Higher Kinnerton, Penyffordd

Area 3

Northop, Halkynm Rhosesmor, Halkyn,  Rhys y cae, Ysceifiog, Caerwys  Babell,  Brynford

Area 4

Cilcain, Nannerch Rhydymwyn Gwernafield

Area 5

Carmel, Whitford, Mostyn, Ffynnongroyw, Gronant, Llanasa, Trelawnyd Gwaenysgor, Trelogon

Area 6

Mold  Sychdyn, Buckley

Each area will have a number of routes ranging in length. The routes are already known to local carriage drivers, but we are often contacted to provide suggestions for routes that visiting members and tourists can do while staying within Flintshire.

To produce the booklet is going to be a challenge identifying routes and researching the history.

We are looking for volunteers who can play an active role  by sparing an hour or two that will make a difference in getting the project off the ground by identifying routes, researching the history of carriage routes through talking to the local communities researching through the archives in Ruthin or Hawarden, taking pictures of routes and interesting places & monuments, contacting local businesses to advertise.

So if you have a interest in local history, sharing routes, know of a school or other groups W.I, local heritage groups etc that may be interested in helping with this project please get involved talk to these groups get them on board and through this booklet we will also be preserving our routes and heritage not only for now but for future generations.

If you would like to know more or get involved please email AC Janet bdsnorthewales@aol.com

It is hoped that this booklet will be completed in time for the start of the next year’s tourist season, March 2012.
