As an integral part of its support for the Society, NFU Mutual will  provide a Personal Liability Insurance Scheme for BDS members throughout the year.

The scheme was introduced to provide BDS members with the peace of mind which Personal Liability Cover provides. This means that if you have no Personal Liability Cover in place elsewhere, you are automatically covered by NFU Mutual as a member of the BDS.

The main features of the scheme for BDS members are as follows:

  • Up to £5 million in compensation for accidental bodily injury or property damage, arising within the UK, from:
  1. ownership, possession or use by any member of a horse or pony
  2. any member riding, leading, handling or driving any horse or pony not owned by them
  3. any cart owned, possessed or used by another member while unattached.
  • The payment of legal and other defence fees in addition to the £5 million.

The scheme does not provide any cover for business use, such as the hire of carriages for weddings and separate cover would therefore need to be arranged. Racing under National Hunt or Jockey Club rules, driving trials and scurry driving are also excluded; however, official events within the BDS and 'Fun Days' are covered. The first £250 of any third party property damage claim is excluded.

The scheme also provides cover on a public highway and the liability of one member to another.

Many BDS members will already have Personal Liability cover as part of their existing house contents or horse policy. If this is the case, a claim should be submitted to your existing insurance company (not NFU Mutual) in the first instance. If you are unsure of your Personal Liability Cover, check this with your current insurer.

If you have a very large claim which exceeds the cover you have elsewhere, NFU Mutual's Personal Liability cover will apply on top of your existing cover - Up to a limit of £5 million. For example, if you have £1 million of Personal Liability cover as part of your house insurance and you make a claim for £1.5 million, your house insurer should be responsible for £1 million and NFU Mutual for £500,000.
