The Tandem
Club
PATRON : SALLIE WALROND,
LHHI
President : Minta Winn, LHHI
The
Tandem Club is part of and runs under the auspices of the British Driving
Society.
The
present Club was formed by Sallie Walrond and Lady Vivien Cromwell in 1977
with the aim of maintaining and promoting the art of tandem driving in a
“coachmanlike style”.
Membership is open to members of the British Driving Society who have
demonstrated their ability to drive a tandem competently and safely in
public on at least three occasions. A Statement of Competence to record
these outings and which should be signed by an appropriately qualified
person may be printed from here
.
Prospective members are scrutinised during the drive at the Meet and
assuming that this is completed satisfactorily are then entitled to wear the
silver tandem bars badge of The Tandem Club.
The
annual Meet is held in different parts of the country to enable as many
members and prospective members as possible to attend.
There is neither entrance fee nor annual subscription to the Club, echoing
the principles of the first 19th Century Tandem Club. Costs are
recovered by means of a raffle at the Meet to which those attending are
expected to donate a prize and to purchase a generous quantity of tickets.
The 2010
Annual BDS Meet of The Tandem Club
This year’s Meet is on
Sunday 18th July and will be held near Weston Park in
Staffordshire. Members and prospective members are welcome with either two-
or four-wheeled, traditional or modern vehicles. Prospective members
wishing to attend are encouraged to start completing their Statement of
Competence as early as possible. All are reminded of the requirement to
drive using the traditional English coaching-style of rein handling.
Any queries about the Club or the Annual Meet should be
