BDS LEVEL 3 DIPLOMA IN DRIVING AND WORKING WITH HARNESS HORSES
QUALIFICATION REFERENCE NUMBER:  501/1071/8

Credit value:   62 credits

In order to achieve this Qualification you must achieve a minimum of 62 Credits from the Units which make up the qualification.  There are 4 Pathways; each Pathway is divided into Groups relating to horse care and stable management and units specific to the particular Pathway.

PATHWAYS:
There are 4 Pathways, please click on each Pathway to see the training course and qualification specifications.

Because many of the Units are common to all  Pathways, you may wish to take more than one Pathway – and thereby achieve more than one Qualification – by adding-on some extra Units.  For example, if you have chosen Pathway 3, Working with Horses in Agriculture Pathway, and find you are also involved in driving Singles or Pairs of horses on the public highway and/or horse training, you may also wish to take Units from Pathway 1, 2 or 4 to gain acknowledgement of your additional skills .  Pathway 3 and 4 Candidates are very strongly advised to take the Optional BDS Level 3 Road Driving Safety Unit for Singles, Pairs or both.

Pathway 1           Driving and Working with Single Harness horses and Single turnouts

This Pathway includes the BDS Level 3 Road Driving Safety Unit for driving Single horses on the public highway.

This Pathway is for you if you regularly drive Single horses you are familiar with for exercise, recreation, BDS or club Meets, pleasure drives and other ‘social’ events, and/or take part in show-ring harness horse classes. Because it is an endorsement of essential skills and underpinning knowledge which are common to all harness horse driving, it is also suitable if you take part in horse driving trials, scurrying, harness racing, etc. As a harness horse Driver, you will have responsibility for turning out the horse, harness and vehicle to a suitable standard for the intended use; you must be able to do this yourself, and also instruct and supervise assistants. By the end of your training course, you should be able to provide a good standard of care for harness horses (whether owned by you, your family, friends, or employer); be competent and knowledgeable in preparing horses, vehicles and harness for a range of recreational activities, and able to give instructions and supervision to the Harness Horse Groom. You should be able to plan and manage feeding and exercise regimes to suit the activities you participate in with the horses you are responsible for.

Successful Candidates will be awarded the BDS Level 3 Driving and Working with Single Harness Horses.  Candidates achieving Units K/601/7338 and J/601/7864 will also be awarded the BDS Level 3 Road Driving Safety Certificate for driving Single Horses.

Pathway 2           Driving and Working with Pairs of Harness horses and Pair turnouts

This Pathway includes the BDS Level 3 Road Driving Safety Unit for driving Pairs of horses on the public highway.

This Pathway is for you if you regularly drive Pairs of horses you are familiar with for exercise, recreation, BDS or club Meets, pleasure drives and other ‘social’ events, and/or take part in show-ring harness horse classes. Because it is an endorsement of essential skills and underpinning knowledge which are common to all harness horse driving, it is also suitable if you take part in horse driving trials, scurrying, harness racing, etc. As a harness horse Driver, you will have responsibility for turning out the horse, harness and vehicle to a suitable standard for the intended use; you must be able to do this yourself, and also instruct and supervise assistants. Pathway 3      Driving and Working with Horses in Agricultural and Land-Based Activities

Modern machinery and the need for mass food-production brought about end of using horses in agriculture, with the result that we are on the brink of losing many of these heritage skills forever. If we are not to also lose our rare and endangered heavy horse breeds, it is essential that we find new ways to maintain their traditional roles.  Training courses provide practical skills and underpinning knowledge to enable you to use horses to manage land, sow, cultivate and harvest crops, as well as safe and effective methods of working with horse drawn agricultural equipment. As the person responsible for working the horse and carrying out the task, you will have responsibility for turning out the horse, harness and vehicle to a suitable standard for the intended use; you must be able to do this yourself, and also instruct and supervise assistants. By the end of your training course you should be able to provide a good standard of care for the horses and plan their work-programme, prepare and use a selection of horse drawn agricultural implements, supervise others when preparing horses, harness and implements and when working with horses in agricultural activities.

You are strongly advised to add the BDS Level 3 Road Driving Safety Units for either Singles or Pairs, or both, because achievement will provide you with the appropriate BDS Level 3 Road Driving Safety Certificate(s),and the training will help you develop skills essential to being able drive horses in harness.  Details appear in Group 3, Optional Units, within the specifications for this Pathway.

Successful Candidates will be awarded the BDS Level 3 Driving and Working with Horses In Agricultural and Land-Based Activities Diploma.

Pathway 4           Assisting with Training Horses to Work in Harness

Most harness horse drivers need to provide some training for their horses; many prefer their horses – especially young or novice horses – to be trained by a professional Harness Horse Trainer. The training course for this Pathway is designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge to assist an experienced Harness Horse Trainer. As the person directly responsible t o the Harness Horse Trainer for assisting with implementing the horse training programme, you will have responsibility for turning out the horse, harness and vehicle to a suitable standard for the intended use; you must be able to do this yourself, and also instruct and supervise assistants; you need to understand how to train a horse for showing and competition, therefore must also know the standards to be applied for this activity. By the end of your course you should be able to contribute to the design and development of a horse training programme;  understand how a training programme should meet the needs and capabilities of individual horses and the person who intends to drive them; provide effective assistance to an experienced harness horse trainer; recognise unusual or stressful behaviour in horses being trained; evaluate the effectiveness of training at each stage; contribute to reviewing and revising a training plan to suit the needs of individual horses; understand alternative methods of safe, effective and humane training.

You are strongly advised to add the BDS Level 3 Road Driving Safety Units for either Singles or Pairs, or both, because achievement will provide you with the appropriate BDS Level 3 Road Driving Safety Certificate(s),and the training will help you develop skills essential to being able to train horses to be driven in harness. Successful Candidates will be awarded the BDS Level 3 Assistant Harness Horse Trainer’s Diploma.
