Brian Sims BDS Young Driver Scholarship 2014
2014 was the fifth year of the Brian Sims sponsorship of the Young Drivers Scholarship, in memory of Mr Brian Sims a keen member and supporter of the Dorset BDS, whose love of education and the traditional ways of driving makes it a fitting memorial.
Twelve young people gathered at Swingletree, near Diss in Norfolk on 28th July by kind invitation of Susan Townsend and John Parker to enjoy a day of driving experiences and assessments of associated knowledge.
The annual qualifying age groups are 10-14 and 15 -18 with the winner of each age group being awarded a prize of £500 to be used at a carriage driving yard of their choice. This year the younger group winner was 13 year old Josiah Rowlands from Wales who will receive the Brian Girling Award and Josiah also took the Barbara Stoddart trophy for overall best driver, as well as the Simon Baker Memorial Trophy, for the highest points gained. This Trophy was presented in memory of Simon Baker, the Founder and CEO of Voice Products, who sponsored the scholarship for many years.
Alice Lockett aged 16 years from Leicestershire was awarded the older age group Scholarship.
These trophies together with a Certificate and Trophy kindly presented by Mr Ian Townsend for the Best Portfolio in a separate competition, will be officially presented at Driving Addington on 27th September 2014. Senior Winner of Best Portfolio is Alice Lockett and the Junior Winner is Lucy Griffiths.
Our Scholarship winners and some of the candidates also then enjoyed a `Day to Remember` at The Royal Mews in London on 7th August when Head Coachman Mr Jack Hargreaves gave everyone a very privileged view behind the scenes that amazed us all and no doubt inspired some of our Junior members for the future.
